Shaping

Turning a foam blank into a surfboard with hand tools

Overview

Shaping is the most hands-on part of the process. Armed with a surform, planer, and sanding screens, you carve the blank down to your design.

Detailed Steps

1

Transfer the template

Trace your outline onto the blank.

2

Rough cut

Use a saw or hot wire to cut close to the outline.

3

Shape the rails

Carve the rail profile from deck to bottom.

4

Fine tune

Use sanding screens to smooth everything and check your rocker.

Expert Tips

Take your time with the rails — they define how the board feels in the water.

Always work symmetrically. Check both sides constantly.

Wear a dust mask. Foam dust is not your friend.
