Flat Sanding

Smoothing the lamination before the filler coat

Overview

After lamination cures, the surface is bumpy and uneven. Flat sanding knocks down the high spots and prepares the board for the filler coat.

Detailed Steps

1

Check the cure

Make sure the lamination is fully hardened.

2

Sand the laps

Smooth the overlap areas where cloth meets cloth.

3

Flat sand the deck and bottom

Use a sanding block for even pressure.

4

Clean the dust

Wipe down thoroughly before the next step.

Expert Tips

Don't sand through the cloth — you'll weaken the board.

Let your hand feel for bumps. Your fingers are the best quality control.

Always sand in the direction of the stringer.
